Over and over again I’m hearing of recalls of toys for various reasons. Lead paint, choking hazard, bits falling off, harmful drugs… it’s all unbelievable, and it’s got to stop.
As a parent you don’t expect a harmless looking toy to be potentially harmful to your child. More time and money needs to be put into making sure toys are safe, not churning out any old crap and harming our kids.
So that’s it for me. No more toys made by large companies.
Handmade toys are fine, not that we need more toys in this house anyway, but when I’m giving a gift to someone elses child – there will be no more toys given. I’ll do colouring books and things like that – but nothing that might be painted with lead, or toys other than handmade.
So I ask anyone buying gifts for our daughter – please be aware of this! Handmade toys are fine, as are books, craft supplies or a multitude of different things…. but not toys, jewelery or anything that might be contaminated with lead. Its use is so wide spread that really, I feel any made in China plastic, metal or wooden item that is painted should be avoided.
If enough people do as I am, perhaps something will be done to prevent this sort of thing happening again.
There is no acceptable level of lead exposure for a child, and the worry is that it can rub off on the skin and be ingested when the child eats something – as well as if the child puts it in their mouth.
“Lead is more dangerous to children than adults because it can harm the developing brain, causing reduced IQ, learning disabilities and behavioral problems, among other things.
A single large dose can cause a medical emergency, but experts said it is more common for lead poisoning to build up gradually over time amid repeated exposure to tiny amounts.”
And if they are finding and recalling all of these – what about others they haven’t tested. Particularly those cheap $2 type toys and those sold by Asian stores?
Barbie, Polly Pocket, Action figure recall because of loose magnets causing harm when ingested and another article on it here
Lead paint found on halloween fake teeth (for christ’s sake these are designed to go in the MOUTH!) can’t get more dangerous than that!
